It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Lailabai Karim today at 10:18 pm (EST) in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Lailabai, better known to us as “ma,” “nanima,” and “big nani,” was a beloved mother and grandmother to us all. She was orphaned at the age of five, married at 16, and a refugee from Uganda with five children at age 32. She arrived to Canada with her family in 1972 and began working in a sewing factory to help support her family, having lost her home and possessions in Uganda. Despite her circumstances, she remained one of the happiest, most vibrant, and most positive women we all know. She served as a dedicated volunteer of the Toronto Jamaat, and was a passionate matchmaker. Most importantly, she was our cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She taught us all how to cook, sew, and love unconditionally. We will miss her dearly, and pray that she is at peace in the hands of Allah.
Lailabai was the wife of Marhoom Shaukatali Karim. She was the Mother of Naznin Alloo (Los Angeles), Yasmin Jivraj (Los Angeles), Sabira Karim (Toronto), Munira Sivjee (Los Angeles), and Shan Karim (Palm Beach).
Lailabai was also the grandmother to Nushin Alloo, Sabira Alloo, Fatima Alloo, Mohamed Alloo, Adam Jivraj, Anisha Jivraj, Shaheen Sivjee, and Sameer Sivjee. She was great-grandmother to Jahaan Ahuja and Naya Ahuja.
